Heather's Bookshelf
This page
features a list and samples from the many different books and series
I've worked on. It also provides brief synopses of each series or book
and links to publishers to see more images and read more about them.
Any of
these books and series are readily available through the publishers or
in a wide variety of bookstores.
Dog Tricks and Training
This project was a dream to work on and
brought together my two great loves in life - writing and training
dogs. This book and DVD gift set also comes with a training clicker and
dog toy. It features my own dogs and dogs belonging to three of my
friends. Using the book and DVD you can teach your dog some basic
obedience skills and lots of fun tricks that will amuse friends and
family. By using the training method I recommend, you will also forge a
close bond and working relationship with your dog - and that's
something very special!

Cyber Hound

Cyber Hound is my title in the popular Ripper Reads series of books for
young readers. Found in all good bookstores Little Rippers and Ripper
Reads are quirky chapter books that are high interest and heaps of fun.
For example, my title is about a boy who discovers he can control his
dog with his Gameboy after the dog gets a microchip ID at the vet.

PM WRITING

PM Writing is one of the most
exciting series of educational books I've ever worked on. Why? Because
it is more than just a reading program. It is a holistic reading and
writing program that teaches children how to do both correctly from the
start. It is a complete learning package with exemplar texts,
workbooks, teachers' notes, DVDs and more. It has proved a huge success
in the marketplace and is now being used to teach many little tackers
the literacy skills that will set them up for life.
I'm also proud to say that this series won the Primary Literacy Series
Award for 2008, voted by peers in the publishing industry.

Nelson Focus
Nelson
Focus was one of the first major Guided Reading series I worked on and
seven years later it is still selling well. Originally intended as
supplementary texts, this series of 64 titles for early and
middle school readers has become core reading in many schools. Sold
extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Asia, translated
into French and Spanish, it is a series I am immensely proud of as
myself and my co-author Julie Haydon produced the series framework,
came up with all the topics and wrote all the texts between us.

PM Science Facts

PM
Chapter Books
I have many
more books in the outstanding range of PM guided readers. The PM
Program is Australia's most successful levelled reading program and
covers all aspects of Primary Literacy. PM Science Facts was written
solely by myself and Julie Haydon. We each have a large number of books
in the rest of the PM program too.

Chill Out!
Chill Out!
is a series of high impact quick reads for reluctant Upper Primary
readers. Chill Outs do not 'talk down' to these readers. Instead they
present high interest contemporary stories that grab the attention of
readers and encourage them to improve their literacy skills. I wrote
the title 'Warp World' for this series and it was one of the few times
I have had the chance to do some really way out weird science fiction
for the educational market. Great fun and readers seem to love it.

Flying Colours

Flying
Colours is a complete literacy program for the first three years of
Primary School. Texts are broadly levelled and focus on teaching
written, oral and visual skills as well as reading. Julie Haydon and
myself wrote the majority of the non-fiction texts in this series and
it has been used extensively by schools in Australia, Asia and Canada.
We are very proud of it!

MACMILLAN LIBRARY BOOKS
Macmillan
Education has been voted Primary Publisher of the Year for the last
three years by a group of its peers in publishing. I am very proud to
say I have co-written two hardback library series for Macmillan - one
entitled Scientists At Work with Rose Inserra and Julie Haydon. The
other, the Money series, is featured here in the above image. These
high quality hardback books are used in schools in Australia and the
United States to educate children and provide them with information for
school projects etc.
NEWS FLASH!!! Macmillan
Education Australia has always produced Australian books for Australian
Schools and now they're about to do it again with Macmillan Australia
Topics. Due to be released early 2010, I have been busy writing 28
titles in this special new series. The series is very Australia-centric
and features Australian topics for our own primary-aged readers. It
focusses strongly on critical, independent thinking and features 'Big
Questions' at the back of each book to encourage class discussion on
the topics. Macmillan Australia Topics is almost a hybrid between
guided readers and Macmillan Library Books and I look forward to seeing
the series take off in 2010.
